| Activity | After a working party recommended the creation of a section in 1980 the Counselling Psychology was agreed December 1981 with its first meeting in January 1982 under the Chairmanship of Richard Nelson-Jones. There were 200 foundation members growing to 450 by December 1985. A working party was set up to consider the case for applying to form a Division of Counselling Psychology in 1985. Divisions had some overview on training and qualifications and so a working party of the Section was set up to consider the 'Essential Components in a Training Course for Counselling Psychologists.
There were 850 members by the end of 1987 and as the first step to becoming a Division - the Section applied for Special Group status in 1988 which was agreed by the Society in March 1989. The BPS Special Group in Counselling Psychology Group worked very closely with the BPS Membership and Qualifications Board to draft recommendations for a Diploma in Counselling Psychology.
In 1992 the Special Group at last achieved their goal of a Diploma in Counselling Psychology and started the process to become a Division [see BPS/02/02/02 BPS Division of Counselling Psychology DCOP] with an extraordinary meeting held in January 1994 which was ratified at the Society's AGM which also voted in favour of the title 'Chartered Counselling Psychologist'.
As well as regional groups there are also by 2018 special interest groups in Black and Asian Counselling Psychologists, Disability. IAPT, Learning Disability, Social Justice Networking and Special Interest Group, Spirituality (formed in 2013), Working in the NHS and Cancer Palliative Care.
In 2021 DCoP established the Environmental and Climate Crisis Workstream to develop and support the development of DCoP members’ personal, professional, scientific and social justice interests in relation to counselling psychology and the environmental and climate crisis.
The DCoP open up the 2021 DCoP annual conference by offering free registration to members of the Division and to undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students who are members of the BPS.
