| Description | Typed and handwritten text of J.C.Kenna's conversation with Dr Bernard Hart (1879-1966) , CBE, FRCP, on December 18th 1953 at Dr Hart's home in Eastbourne Sussex. Also includes Kenna's notes and correspondence between Kenna and Hart concerning Hart's career, post interview clarifications and arrangements for the interview itself.
Bernard Hart talks of his medical examinations, his medical teachers, Ernest Jones and his introduction to psychoanalysis, Janet and Freud's work, early appointments at St Albans asylum and Long Grove asylum. Appointment in 1910 as lecturer in psychiatry at UCHMS [University College Medical School] and in 1912 opened an outpatients clinic there in 1912.
Between 1914-194 was visiting physician to the Special Hospital for Officers, Palace Green and then joined the RAMC in 1917 where he was sent to Maghull Military Hospital to instructed RAMC officers in psycho-neuroses - clinical psychiatry. After leaving the army Hart became consultant physician in psychological medicine at UCH [University College Hospital) and employed the first psychiatric social work.in England. After a Commonwealth Fund visit to the USA in 1927 started establishing child guidance clinics; appointment in 1938 as adviser to Ministry of Health to prepare a scheme for dealing with psycho-neuroses during the war but cases during the second world war were less than expected and they were put on half time instead, and his Harley Street practice. |
