Brought up in Scarborough, father was a bookseller. Studied psychology and zoology at Durham (1966) after having read Eysenck as a teenager. Durham Department run by Professor Fred Smith. Married after university (Mick Lemon) and moved to London - Harding started Phd but gave up after a term and then worked as a primary school teacher in Hackney Wick London - during a difficult period with population and housing changes. Harding then started clinical psychology course at Newcastle (1969-1971) under Douglas Savage - six on course - 2 days teaching, 2 days placement, 1 day reading a week. Outpatients at Newcastle hospital. Offered work placement in Nuffield Child Psychology Unit but moved to Ulster to follow husband's career. Originally in Londonderry and got a part time job as a clinical psychologist - first one created role. Moved to Coleraine - got a job in Education Department at University of Ulster teaching psychology - university lecturer - which did not enjoy. No clinical psychologist in Coleraine - nearest was Belfast. No mentoring available. After remarriage (John Sewell) moved back to England to Leicester - wanted to help people through psychology - early intervention - which led to child psychology specialty- moving then to Scotland firstly Aberdeen and afterwards to Edinburgh. Many referrals were very poor from deprived housing estates. Paediatrics was more rewarding because could make more of a difference. Used a developmental model (ages and stages). Learnt about family therapy whilst working with psychiatrists in Aberdeen (Nancy Thompson).

Joined BPS early in career - got involved when in Aberdeen - good for connections - sat on committees - Scottish BPS and Special Interest Group with Clinical Work with Children and Young People.
Took a job in Edinburgh on part time child training course and also part time clinical and then became head of service in Borders and then in Fife. In retirement helped develop Edinburgh masters course in Early Intervention. Snap (Scottish Needs Assessment Programme) group reporting on Child and Adolescent Mental Health to the Scottish Executive (2000-2003).
