DescriptionMP4 sound recording transferred to CD of an oral history interview with Professor Marie Johnston (b. 1944) by Kate Davidson. c. 67 minutes 3 March 2017 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
Aberdeen University. Copy of CV on file. Born 6 July 1944.

Brought up in Aberdeen - father lorry driver was first in family to go to university. Studied at Aberdeen University - maths, chemistry, physics and zoology (first year) and then in the second year did psychology - enjoyed experimental work - Betty Fraser was the Professor of Psychology - inspiring teacher of statistics, also John Sheppard - social psychology - did project on delinquency (1966). Phd in Hull (1970)- was isolated as few Phd students there. Studied delinquents in approved schools. Went with Derek to conference on Memory. Bored of Phd after two year so got a job in an approved school as a research officer - wanted more rehabilitation than was offered but too junior to make a difference. Inspired by Gerald Patterson. Thought of herself as a researcher rather than a psychology - moved to Oxford with Derek - applied as a researcher evaluating community hospitals - importance of randomisation. Richard Doll was head of department and Marie attended his epidemiology lectures - recovery from surgery better at community hospital or teaching hospital - needed to create measure of recovery/anxiety. Became health psychology - which did not exist at the time. Report came out which suggested that psychologists work in primary care. May Davidson - suggested that Marie work at ?Warnford [Wallingford?] (1974-1977) - trained by Oxford Clinical Psychology - John Kirk. Training was ad hoc. Did BPS diploma in clinical psychology (1977). Attended Behaviour Therapy Conference, Heathrow 1974 and met Gerald Patterson.

Became lecturer (1977) at the Royal Free Medical School - eventually became head of Department. Enjoyed commuting. Fay Fransella - personal construct theory. Worked on palliative care team. Importance of diaries. Stress management clinic in hospital for staff and patients. Teaching medical students helped to develop health psychology - working with other psychologists in London University who were also teaching medical students. Importance of BPS - firstly running symposia at conference - building up network culminating in Division of Health Psychology - launched at London Conference 1986. John Weinman. Stephen Wright. British Journal of Medical Psychology - became 'Health Psychology'. Set up European Health Psychology; anxiety, pregnancy screening, disability, bed blocking (leads to cognitive impairment).

Proud of stroke patient intervention research. Dentists implementation of education and reward \programme to improve children's teeth. Funding for health psychology.

Since 2011 Emeritus role (Aberdeen University) - can carry on - freedom - less bureaucracy - study with Susan Michie 'Human Behaviour Change Project' - definitions so that computer can search literature to extract information from e.g. IBM Watson. Setting up Health Psychology Bulletin.

Thank BPS for honours and for all the collaborations.
