Description | Audio cassette sound recording of an interview with Dr. Adrian Skinner for the British Psychological Society's Oral History project.
The interview was conducted by Christine Williams in 2007.

CW asks AS why did he want to become a psychologist
AS talks of choosing a business degree at Sheffield University in the 1960s, his option to take psychology as part of his business degree, his growing interest in psychology and subsequent switch to taking a dedicated psychology degree
AS then talks of his route into clinical psychology via a training course at the Royal Crichton Hospital in Dumfries and gives details of the course such as taking the BPS Diploma, placements, Crichton's Department, John Raven, rooms, his memorable supervisors including George Lewin?, Jim Drury
AS speaks of finishing his course at the Crichton and his move to Doncaster Health Authority in 1975. AS talks of his colleagues at Doncaster including, Marcia Davies, Joyce Giesler and working with P Stonberg?
CW asks AS if he did any research at that time
AS speaks of his undergraduate research in Self Disclosure, his post graduate theory of self disclosure and writing chapters on a variety of topics including memory.
AS talks of his work at Doncaster, the state of clinical psychology at that time (1970s), the influence on clinical psychologists of the Trethowan Report [ Department of Health 1977], UK clinical psychology, behavioural psychology, Eysenck and Vic Meyer, psychology research into psychotherapy, applied psychologists, learning behaviours and the professional independence of clinical psychologists at that time.
AS speaks of his early years in practice, applying techniques and move from Doncaster (after 3 years) to York Health Authority, his involvement with care in the community, the then developing outreach facilities in the county (Harrogate, North Allerton) and out-patient treatments.
In response to CW's question concerning the state of waiting lists at the time AW talks of GP referrals, local psychiatrists, psychological treatments and waiting list build-ups.
AW then talks of shifts in problems presented such as Aspergers, eating disorders, adult autism.
In response to CW's question concerning AS 's relationship with psychiatrists and other professionals AS talks of his early working experiences with psychiatrists and the emergence of psychology as a senior discipline.
AS speaks of the present flowering of clinical psychology and the Health Service and the increased senior positions of clinical psychologists, drawbacks, CBT and the government drive to help more people and the state of CBT training.
AS talks of the high intelligence of graduate psychologists and their unique contribution of information for planning.
AS speaks of the Trethowan Report and its impact on grading, the Manpower Advisory Group, the increased number of trained psychologists, the influence of the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology, parallels with nursing practitioners, clinical tasks, research assessment and quality service provision.
AS talks of his work with the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP), his first office as Branch Secretary, DCP colleagues, his work as Treasurer of the DCP (1991-1994) and time as Chair of the DCP (1996).
AS speaks of his Doctorate in 2005, his 3 years at Leeds University with Dave Green, his PhD research project in 'psychological treatment via the internet' and psychology on the internet
AS speaks of conference attendance, BPS Annual Conferences in the 1980s, social interaction at conferences and the first DCP annual conference.
In response to CW's question AS mentions the establishment of a Department in Harrogate as his greatest achievement so far and NHS reorganisation.

AS speaks about various reorganisations during his career, the NHS in general, the payment by results system and efficiency problems.
AS then talks of the state of the NHS, privatisation of parts of the NHS and psychological treatments being put out to tender.
AS speaks of his early research project in alcohol abuse and cognitive abilities at Harrogate, the results of the project and media interest when the project was published.
As finishes the interview with a few comments on his interactions with people and his lack of sporting ability. Side B ends
