Description | Audio cassette sound recording of an interview with Ingrid J.Collins, AFBPsS, CSci., CPsychol.,FSSA, Psychologist and Soul Therapist for the BPS Oral History project.

RA asks IC why she chose to become a psychologist
IC speaks of her early life experiences, how she was always a good listener, her interest in the sciences and arts, how psychology study combined both areas (science and art) and her interest in human behaviour
RA asks IC what were her other options (besides psychology) as a young student
IC talks of her love of languages, the sparsity (at the time) of female students with science degrees and how she saw psychology (on the science side) as a marketable skill IC continues to talk of her psychology degree and the scientific and statistical side of psychology including research aspects
RA asks IC how she would describe her development from a traditional to a (let's say) Humanistic form of psychology
IC speaks of her early interest and involvement with educational psychology and the therapeutic process, feeding her creative energy, her early teaching (1972), her post-grad experiences at the Tavistock Clinic, psychodynamic discipline, her interest in systemic ideas from the USA and Italy (Hoffman), the Milan therapy team (Gianfranco Cecchin), the focus in educational psychology on therapeutic and organisational aspects and her work with schools and parents
RA asks IC did she find the climate (at the time) particularly helpful in regard to the development of her ideas
IC talks of her experiences as an educational psychologist, her work at Epsom, case conferences at a local mental hospital and her work with children
IC continues to talk of her first educational psychologist post, the Child Guidance Clinic, how she was part of a multi-discipline team, the ethos of the team, her educational psychology colleagues, behaviourism and how she thoroughly enjoyed her time at Epsom
RA asks IC if she felt that the 1960s was a period of new thinking in psychology
IC mentions the 1970s before moving on to talk of her early social background, the artistic flowering of music and art during the 1960s and how the period was a 'wonderful time'
RA follows up the question by asking IC how she went on from this very optimistic view of psychology in the 1960s to her current work
IC states that she was very fortunate to move into a consultant post at ILEA (Inner London Education Authority), her ILEA role as a consultant to Westminster Social Services, how times were different for people in inner London areas during the 1980s, her personal illness, how she made a decision (with her redundancy package) to start her own consultancy, her administrative skills, her therapeutic contracts, her work with adults rather than children, her first clients (working from home) before moving on to speak of the influence of one of her early clients (a spiritual healer) on the unexpected recovery of her poorly cat which led her to the possibilities of combining conscious healing with real level healing and working with spiritual energy
IC speaks of her curiosity about subtle energy techniques, how she began to study Chines forms of energy philosophies including Feng Shui and I Ching, electro-biology, the state of being, the fundamentalism of the soul and how she started to describe it as soul therapy
RA asks IC if she still is a psychologist
IC says yes and speaks of and extension of psychology, a more natural healing process, spiritual energy system and the scientific her first degree psychology degree (Manchester), her training at the Tavistock Clinic and how delving further into emotional health and physical well-being led to a progression from there
IC speaks of the comparison of her spiritual experiences now and what they might have been 20 years ago
RA asks IC if she is attempting to influence the BPS in order that the BPS may embrace some of her ideas
IC talks of how she presented a paper to the BMA in 2008 and her presentation to BPS London and Home Counties branch and her work on the BPS Media Panel

IC in answer to a few of RA's questions speaks of the American Scientist Dan Benor's proving the positive effects of spiritual healing, work-life balances and the support of her family and colleagues
RA asks IC how she sees the role of psychologists and are they going down the right path
IC talks of psychologists lacking self-respect and not valuing their own contributions, obsessional areas, the theory and application of psychology and her experiences within her own practice
IC mentions she thinks of herself as a psychologist and a healer before RA thanks her for her time and ends the interview.
