TitleBPS Oral History Project
Date2005 - 2017
Extent3-records boxes
DescriptionAn ongoing collection of recorded audio interviews with various psychologists made by the British Psychological Society for its Oral History Project, the recordings began in 2005.

The overall aim of the BPS Oral History Project is to create a collection of oral history interviews to extend the John C. Kenna Audio Archive and to complement the collection of documents and visual material housed in the British Psychological Society's history of psychology archives.

The project will provide the sound archive with records of the recollections of psychologists during the formative years of the development of professional, academic and organised psychology in the UK, and, as time goes on, a record of later developments.

A particular aim of the project is to generate a widely representative archive of accounts across different areas of study and professional experience in psychology. Oral history interviews will concentrate on collecting first-hand recollections of education and professional training and of the variety of personal and professional issues related to being a psychologist in different contexts and over time.

The persons selected for interview talk of their experiences in psychology viz. study, practice, teaching, research, departmental life, people and events, etc.

AdminHistoryThe overall aim of the BPS Oral History Project is to create a collection of oral history interviews to extend the John C. Kenna Audio Archive and to complement the collection of documents and visual material in the Society's history of psychology archives. This will provide a record of the recollections of psychologists during the formative years of the development of professional, academic and organised psychology in the UK, and, of course, as time goes on, a record of later developments.

A particular aim of the project is to generate a widely representative archive of accounts across different areas of study and professional experience in psychology. Oral history adds a human context and recognises the value of individual experience, therefore interviews will concentrate on collecting first-hand recollections of education and professional training and of the variety of personal and professional issues related to being a psychologist in different contexts and over time. Once completed the taped interviews will be stored as sound recordings at the History of Psychology Centre in Tabernacle Street.

The persons selected for interview talk of their experiences in psychology (study, practice, teaching, research, departmental life, people, events, etc.) and are not necessarily eminent psychologists
