1 May 2020 New report suggests further decline in the mental wellbeing of university staff - Release promoting the publication Pressure Vessels II, by the Higher Education Policy Institute. Report is a follow up to a 2019 report which found increases in counselling and occupational health referrals at universities between 2016 and 2018. New report finds situation has worsened. BPS Cheif Executive Sarb Bajwa expresses concern and calls for greater support for academic staff;

4 May 2020 Psychologists produce advice for key workers and their children - Release promoting two guidance documents issued by the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology’s Faculty for Children, Young People and their Families in response to the coronavirus pandemic: 'Advice for Key Worker Parents: Helping your child adapt to changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic' and 'When your parent is a key worker: Advice for children and young people during the Coronavirus';

4 May 2020 Supporting each other through loss and bereavement - Release promoting a leaflet and two videos produced by the British Psychological Society's Covid-19 bereavement task force; ‘Supporting yourself and others: coping with death and grief during the Covid-19 pandemic’, 'Using technology to say goodbye' and 'Covid-19: Planning for your digital legacy';

7 May 2020 Watch free BPS webinar on meeting the psychological needs of people recovering from severe Covid-19 - Release promoting the BPS webinar 'Meeting the psychological needs of people recovering from severe coronavirus' hosted by David Murphy (President of the British Psychological Society) and Dr Dorothy Wade (Principal Health Psychologist, Critical Care, at UCLH NHS Trust). Webinar explores topics including the psychological aspects of recovery, risk factors of ongoing psychological difficulties and best practice in approaching psychological care;

14 May 2020 Psychologists offer advice on alternative ways to remember loved ones - Release promoting online leaflet composed by the British Psychological Society’s Covid-19 bereavement task force entitled 'Continuing bonds: Alternative ways to remember friends or family during Covid-19'. Leaflet suggests alternative ways to help us remember friends and family who have died during the pandemic, including lighting a candle, holding a virtual memorial and making a memory box;

19 May 2020 Care home staff and residents need support to manage their grief during Covid-19 - Release promoting a new guidance document issued by the BPS's Covid-19 bereavement task force entitled 'Death and grieving in a care home during Covid-19: The experience of care staff, residents and families'. Guidance outlines steps psychology professionals can take to support care home workers and residents;

19 May 2020 Open letter to Government on young people's mental health during lockdown - Release promoting open letter to the UK Government cosigned by the BPS and 30 other organisations. Letter calls for greater support from the Government to aide young people with their mental health in during the coronavirus. Emergency funding, a wellbeing apckage for schools and a national campaign promoting positive approaches for maintaining mental wellbeing requested;

20 May 2020 BPS guidance to support psychologists with remote client assessments during Covid-19 - Release promoting BPS guidelines document entitled 'Psychological assessment undertaken remotely'. Guidance outlines best practice for decision-making around undertaking remote client assessments, to enable psychologists to meet the needs and circumstances of individual clients, services or specialities;

20 May 2020 BPS advice on finding a ‘new normal’ in the workplace - Release promoting statement from the BPS Covid-19 Working Differently Group entitled 'Easing lockdown: How employers and employees can prepare for the new normal at work'. Statement encourages employers to be consider new ways of working and to encourage dialogue between managment and staff;

20 May 2020 BPS welcomes Welsh Government funding announcement - Release promoting BPS support for a Welsh Government announcement of additional funding to support children under 11 years old with their mental and emotional wellbeing. BPS Chief Executive Sarb Bajwa praises government, emphasising impact of Covid-19 on children's wellbeing;

21 May 2020 BPS guidance on meeting the psychological needs of people with learning disabilities and their carers - Release promoting a guidance document issued by the DCP Faculty for People with Intellectual Disabilities entitled 'Covid-19: Meeting the psychological needs of people with learning/intellectual disabilities, and their families and staff'. Document offers advice for psyhologist's supporting individuals whose care has been interrupted bt Covid-19, are resident in care homes and more;

28 May 2020 BPS delivers new guidance on supporting psychological needs of children as they go back to school - Release promoting a guidance document issued by the BPS Division of Educational and Child Psychology entitled 'Back to school: Using psychological perspectives to support re-engagement and recovery'. Guidance considers the challenges at government, community, school, family and child levels to children returning to school following the Covid-19 pandemic;

29 May 2020 Advice for Athletes during Covid-19 - Release promtoing a guidance document issued by BPS's Covid -19 Sport and Exercise Psychology Working Group entitled 'Advice for Athletes during Covid-19'. Guidance offers advice to athletes on protecting their mental health and maintaining motivation during the Covid-19 pandemic;

29 May 2020 BPS launches new films to highlight use of play to regulate children’s emotions and support psychological wellbeing - Release promoting the publication of two promotional videos by the Division of Educational Psychology on the importance of play to support children's wellbeing in the context of Covid-19 entitled 'The psychology of play' and 'Back to school transition: the importance of playtime'. The first film highlights the benefits of using play to help children understand the changes they are experiencing and gives tips on using play to support their wellbeing. The second film offers professionals expert advice from educational psychologists and experts in play about its role in supporting learning and promoting children’s wellbeing as they return to a school environment that may look very different.;

29 May 2020 BPS welcomes HEE expansion of clinical psychology training places - Release in which BPS formally welcomes news that Health Education England (HEE) will increase places for the September intake of clinical psychology trainees and child and adolescent psychotherapists by 25 per cent.
