2 July 2020 Bringing People into Policy Making - Release promoting a BPS event organised as part of the ongoing Psychological Government Programme. Organised by the BPS Policy Team and Chaired by BPS Policy Adviser Saskia Perriard-Abdoh, the event was an online webinar, in which Matthew Taylor CBE (chief executive of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts), John Amaechi OBE,(CEO of APS and member of the Psychological Government steering group), and Kathryn Scott (Director of Policy for the BPS) discussed the roots of failed government policy. Consideration was also given to how embedding psychological frameworks and approaches could be used to mitigate and ideally avoid the unintended consequences that can arise from policy decisions that don’t connect with the people they affect.
5 July 2020 BPS first to team up with British Red Cross - Release promoting a new joint initiative between the BPS and the British Red Cross; Psychosocial Reserve Volunteers. Trained clinical and counselling psychologists are invited to volunteer alongside experienced British Red Cross staff to provide psychosocial support to people affected by crisis or disasters in the UK;
6 July 2020 Overcoming the challenges of interpreting online: psychologists release guidance for working with interpreters remotely - Release promoting a guidance document published by the BPS entitled 'Working with interpreters online or via the telephone'. Composed by a BPS Covid-19 working group led by Chair elect of the Division of Clinical Psychology Roman Raczka, the guidance offers advice about technology, virtual consultations, and specific tips for working with different client groups;
8 July 2020 BPS urges UK governments to tackle poverty with anti-poverty Strategy - Release promoting the launch of the BPS 'From Poverty to Flourishing’ campaign and associated briefing paper 'From poverty to flourishing – Bringing psychology into action on poverty'. Paper advocates a policy approach led by the insights afforded by Psychology.
9 July 2020 BPS offers psychological guidance for cancer services impacted by Covid-19 - Release promoting a guidance paper published by the DCP Faculty for Oncology & Palliative Care (SIGOPAC) entitled 'Psychological insights for cancer services recovery planning'. Guidance paper seeks to offer support to professionals working with cancer patient's whose care is to be impacted by Covid-19;
9 July 2020 The BPS calls for a proactive approach to managing Covid-19 challenges in relation to minority groups - Release promoting a resource paper published by the BPS Division of Clinical Psychologists Minorities Subcommittee aimed to better equip employers, colleagues, peers, and the general public to understand some of the unique challenges of Covid-19 faced by people in minority groups;
13 July 2020 Supporting Young Athletes during Lockdown - Release promoting guidance paper from the BPS Division of Sport and Exercise (DSEP) entitled 'Supporting Young Athletes during lockdown: Advice for parents and guardians'. Chair of DSEP Rob Morris outlines three key principles for athletes to consider; self-management for parents and guardians, navigating uncertainty and motivation and goal setting;
16 July 2020 Help us review our obesity recommendations - Release appealing for psychologistst to join a 'task and finish' group reviewing BPS recommendations on obesity in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Successful applicants will review and potentially alter the 2019 guidance document entitled 'Psychological perspectives on obesity';
16 July 2020 BPS calls for universal free internet access to tackle the digital divide and the impact of Covid-19 on poverty in the UK - Release promoting five recommendations from the BPS to the British government as part of the 'Poverty to Flourishing' campaign. BPS Director of Policy Kathryn Scott outlines five measures to tackle poverty in the Covid-19 and post Covid environment, including free internet access, addressing the psychological impacts of poverty and investment in local government;
17 July 2020 Guidance for psychologists with Covid-19, what information should they declare to contact tracers? - Release promoting BPS DCP advice paper entitled 'Confidentiality considerations for psychologists who may have Covid-19'. Paper guides professionals through the ethical issues of retaining client confidentiality whilst passing on important information about the spread of the virus;
20 July 2020 Psychologists called to action on recovery from Covid-19 - Release promoting article published in the British Psychological Society’s British Journal of Psychology entitled 'Research priorities for the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond: A call to action for psychological science'. The article identifies current gaps in knowledge created by society’s changing needs due to Covid-19 and outlines where robust new evidence is needed to inform and shape decision-making for recovery strategies. This paper was written by a expert group comprised of Professor Daryl O’Connor (chair), University of Leeds; Professor Christopher Armitage (co-chair), University of Manchester John Aggleton, Cardiff University; Professor Sir Cary Cooper, University of Manchester; Professor Susan Gathercole, University of Cambridge; Professor Sandra Dunsmuir. 21 July 2020 BPS publishes its psychological manifesto for the Senedd Election 2021 - Release promoting a manifesto in which the BPS priorities for the Welsh Government are outlined. BPS Director of Policy Kathryn Scott and Chair of the BPS Welsh Branch call for action on education, health and social care, poverty and working practices, and ask the Government consider the impact of policy on peoples' psychological well-being;
22 July 2020 BPS provides guidance on outdoor talking therapies - Release promoting BPS Faculty of Holistic Psychology guidance document entitled 'The use of talking therapy outdoors'. Dr Sam Cooley, committee member of the BPS Faculty of Holistic Psychology advocates for the benefits of outdoor therapies. Considerations for psychologists before practicing outdoor therapy outlined;
23 July 2020 'To be anti-racist is a radical choice ...' - Release promoting the BPS DCP Racial and Social Inequalities in the Times of Covid-19 working group position paper 'Radical and social inequalities: Taking the conversations forward'. Paper aims to support further discussion on racism and inequality in light of the pandemic. The paper also outlines an urgent call to action to support and learn from at-risk communities;
28 July 2020 New guidance on digital adaptations to supervision and observations - Release promoting BPS DCP Digital Healthcare Sub-committee gudiance document entitled 'Digital adaptations to supervision and observations'. Guidance seeks to advise on providing good quality supervision for trainees and staff digitally in the time of Covid-19;
28 July 2020 Psychologists release advice on meeting the needs of children in shielding families - Release promoting BPS DCP Faculty for Children, Young People and their Families guidance document entitled 'Meeting the psychological needs of children in shielding families'. Guidance advises that children should be included in conversations and decision making around exiting lockdown and ensuring that they can access professional assistance via video;
28 July 2020 BPS welcomes obesity initiatives but urges focus on root causes underpinned by psychology - Release promoting BPS response Government measures to tackle obesity including a 9pm watershed on junk food advertising and a ban on buy one get one free promotions for unhealthy foods. BPS states that for interventions to have real impact they must look to understand all the causes of obesity - biological, psychological and social, – and use approaches to behaviour change for prevention and weight management that are informed by psychology;
29 July 2020 Tips for adults receiving therapy via video - Release promoting BPS DCP Digital Healthcare subcommittee guidance document entitled 'Top tips for psychological sessions delivered by video call for adult patients'. Document includes tips on building trust and practical guidance on what to do if the connection fails;
29 July 2020 BPS supports Your Covid Recovery - Release promoting BPS support for Your Covid Recovery, a new NHS website designed to help people recover from Covid-19 at home;
30 July 2020 BPS responds to NHS People Plan - Release promoting BPS support for the NHS People Plan 2020-21, an annual report outlining objectives and strategies for the NHS in the coming months. The plan emphasises the role of psychologists in supporting patients, staff and organisations;
30 July 2020 Psychologists launch new guidance to help manage young people’s pandemic anxieties - Release promoting guidance document devised by the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology entitled 'Managing uncertainty in children and young people: Advice for parents during the Covid-19 pandemic'.
