1 October 2020 British Psychological Society responds to Coronavirus Act review and its impact on Education, Health and Care assessments - Release raising concerns from the BPS about the extension of the Cornavirus Act and its impact on Education, Health and Care (EHC) assessments for young people with special education needs or disabilities. Dr Gavin Morgan, vice chair of the Division for Educational and Child Psychologists, argues that the Act causes delays in provision for children and imapcts negatively on their development and mental health;
5 October 2020 The psychological state of our political system: how the pressures of working in Parliament affect democratic decisions making - Release promoting a new report from the BPS entitled 'Cognitive strain in Parliament: How can we reduce psychological stressors to improve policy-making?' by Andrew Baldwin, Cynthia Pinto, Saskia Perriard-Abdoh and Ashley Weinberg. Informed by interviews with MPs, former MPs and staffers, the research looks at nine factors in Parliament which can have a significant impact on people’s ability to conduct political work, including distrust, political labour, fragmented organisational cultures, unclear lines of authority, and the temporal nature of Parliament itself;

8 October 2020 Psychologists lay out the foundations for a fairer, healthier Scotland - Release promoting a manifesto from the Scottish Branch of the BPS entitled 'A psychological manifesto for the next Scottish Parliament'. The document argues for greater use of psychological evidence within policy development in the areas of domestic violence, substance misuse and poverty.
8 October 2020 PsychHub - a great resource for BPS members - Release promoting the launch of PsychHub, a gateway giving British Psychological Society members easy access to the latest psychological research and resources. Members will be able to access 11 BPS journals, BPS books and, with support from our publishing partners Wiley, more than 30 other key psychology journals and multimedia resources (including the History of Psychology Centre archive).

9 October 2020 New report explains why so many of us are depressed, and how we can build a less depressing society - Release promoting BPS Division of Clinical Psychology report 'Understanding Depression: Why adults experience depression and what can help'. Report argues that depression should not necessarily be viewed as an illness but as a complex human experience often brought about by adverse circumstances;
10 October 2020 Psychologists recognised in 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours - Release promoting the BPS members recoginised in the Queen's Birthday Honours. The winners were as follows: Professor Lucy Yardley, Professor of Health Psychology, University of Bristol and University of Southampton, was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire), for services to the Covid-19 response. Dr Kim Golding, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, was awarded a CBE for services to children and young people. Professor Sophie Scott, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Neuroscience. Professor Michael West, Professor of Work and Organisational Psychology, Lancaster University, was awarded a CBE for services to compassion and innovation in the NHS. Dr Derek Farrell was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to psychology.
16 October 2020 Psychologists offer guidance to support shielding adults with additional needs as guidelines continue to change - Release promoting a BPS guidance document 'Guidance for health professionals supporting groups with specific complex needs who are or have been shielding'. The document provides guidance for those working with adults with complex needs such as learning disabilities, autism spectrum conditions and dementia, advising them on how to reassure their clients and work with care providers.
22 October 2020 BPS responds to NHS report on The Mental Health of Children and Young People in England in 2020 - Release in which the BPS responds to NHS Digital report 'Mental Health of Children and Young People in England, 2020'. Dr Gavin Morgan, vice chair of the Division for Educational and Child Psychology outlines the BPS' concerns with the findings of the report, which shows the negative impact of the austerity and coronavirus on young people's mental health;
23 October 2020 Community action vital to stopping the spread of Covid-19 - Release promoting a BPS guidance document by the BPS Covid-19 Community Action and Resilience Working Group, 'Psychological insights for facilitating community resilience to respond to consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic'. Document makes six recommendations for the facilitation of community resilience including listening to at risk communities and providing adequate resources
26 October 2020 BPS gives evidence to the Senedd's Health Committee on the impact of Covid-19 - Release promoting Dr Jenny Nam, Chair of the BPS Division of Counselling Psychology in Wales, giving evidence to the Welsh Parliament’s Health, Social Care and Sport Committee inquiry into the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on health and social care in Wales.
27 October 2020 New BPS guidance to help experts support people to look after their health during pandemic - Release promoting six new guidance documents composed by the BPS Covid-19 Behavioural Science and Disease Prevention Taskforce aiming to encourage the public to adopt health behaviours during the Covid-19 pandemic. The documents cover physical activity, sedentary behaviour, eating behaviour, stopping smoking, alcohol consumption and sleep hygiene.
28 October 2020 Going digital for the 6th APPTS Annual Forum - Release promoting the Accreditation Programme for Psychological Therapies Services (APPTS) 6th Annual Forum. APPTS is a partnership between the British Psychological Society and the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Centre for Quality Improvement. Topics to be discussed include new ways of working, delivering psychological support in a covid world and the involvement of family, friends and carers.
