AdminHistoryThe need for a house style was recognised by the Council of the British Psychological Society in 1976 and in 1979 the Publications Business Sub-Committee was asked to develop one. Over the next five years the issue was cause for much debate until in 1984 the Books and Special Projects Group designed a new logo a graphic design based upon a box around the letters BPS which was launched May 1984 (and was in use until 1987). However it led to strong objections by some of the subsystems [Member Networks] of the Society and after more debate in the Standing Committee on Communication and research into responses to different designs by Peter Morris at Lancaster University it was agreed in 1987 to revert to a version of the 'psyche' contained within the seal of Society and designed in the 1960s. A revised version of this design was agreed in 2004 and 2019.

In 1999 as part of a Society restructure Ingrid Lunt was appointed Director of Publication and a P4P [Preparation for Publication] team drew up house style notes which led to publications style guide. See BPS/001/12 Publications and Publishing
