July 1954 BPS Committee on Professional Psychologists (Mental Health) hold an open meeting for all NHS clinical psychologists to discuss the implications of PTA Circular Number 27 from the Whitley Council. It was agreed that the Whitley Council representatives and the Committee should jointly examine the feasibility of recognising the conditions of membership of the BPS Professional Psychologists (Mental Health) ie. full apprenticeship year, and also the issue of non-psychological bodies having the authority to grant certificates of proficiency.
In 1954 the AGM agreed that one of the roles of the Charter Committee was to 'confirm the prestige of the Society as a scientific organisation capable of giving a service to the communbity and as the responsible body in Brtiain concered with the standards and conduct of psychologists. With regard to the first of these aims, a number of projects were reviewed by the Charter Committtee and the problem of selection for secondary education was chosen as one upon which "an authoritative statement would be opportune" published by Methuen in 1957]... During the year a committee appointed by Council prepared a report for the Royal Commission on the Law relating to Mental Illness and Mental Deficiency and was able to refer to several works and papers published by members of the Society. It is important that the list of such services to the community, other than directly to members of the Society'. [Annual Report 1954-1955]

1955 Report on Postgraduate Training in Educational and Clinical Psychology prepared by the English Division of the Committee of Professional Psychologists (Mental Health) published in January 1956 and circulated to Regional Hospital Boards, Hospital Management Committees, Local Education Authorities, University Departments and Employment Bureaux. 1958 reported that discussions have continued between the Ministries for Education and Health and the Society on arrangements for a 'Council for Training in Educational and Clinical Psychology' [BPS/002/2/07/01 DCP Reports and Documents 1955-1976]
