| Description | Correspondence (internal and with stakeholders), memos, meeting notes, responses, press releases, drafts and reports of two British Psychological Society Professional Affairs Board working parties considering the role, employment, relationships and training of psychologists in Social Services Departments.
The first working party Psychological Services in Social Services Department (1979-1982) was founded in 1979 to consider possible roles and organisation of applied psychologists in Social Services Departments and other relevant social work agencies; to consider what new post-graduate training or modification of existing training such roles might require; to consider a proposal for a DHSS [Department of Health and Social Security] research study. Dr B J Brown convened the first meeting on 30 November 1979 under the chairmanship of J Fitch. The research proposal was not agreed but the working party carried out surveys (of England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and visits in England and Wales. The Group (B J Brown, J H Fitch, Valerie Barden, Tony Black, R Ford, Joan Harbison, Bernard Kat, I McDonald, F M McPherson, P C Maggs, Cairine Petrie and R S Taylor) report in Spring 1982 and were asked to revise certain sections. The report was printed and circulated November 1983 as a consultation document and after receiving a range of comments it was agreed in June 1985 that the report could not be a used as a policy Statement.
A second Professional Affairs Board Social Services working party (1988-1990) was formed 19 May 1988 convened by Annie Holmes after lobbying by the Division of Clinical Psychologists but also included representatives from England and Scotland from the Division of Educational Psychology, Criminological and Legal Psychology and Occupational Psychology. The group comprised Nick Barlow, Malcolm Billinge, Neil Hall, Chris Williams and Alan Mackie. - it's report of 1990 was accepted as policy of the British Psychological Society in September 1990. The group organised seminars 'Psychologists in Community Settings'. The report included sections on The Work of Social Services Departments in England and Wales; and Scotland; Current Practice of Psychologists in Social Services/Social Work Departments; Planning Service Delivery, Professional Issues; Professional Training and Recommendations - one of which included proposing the creation of a British Psychological Society Special Group of Psychologists and Social Services (1995).
