AdminHistory | With the passing of the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act a controversy arose regarding the use in careers guidance of psychological tests which were in separate forms for the sexes. In an attempt to make a constructive effort to resolve this controversy, Dr Eileen Byrne, then Education Officer of the Equal Opportunities Commission, arranged a meeting of representatives of the main organisations involved on 22 September 1976. This led to the formation of a working party to set out the issues in a coherent form and make recommendations on a possible courses of action, including the possibility of taking a test case under the act. An interim report was produced in June 1978 and as the EOC did not agree with all the recommendations The British Psychological Society agreed to publish the report in 1982. The working party comprised Eileen Byrne (Equal Opportunities Commission), Keith Miller (BPS), K Wyld (Association of Careers Advisory Services), A M Butler (Institute of Careers Advisors), D J Herbert (Council for Local Education Officers), T D Black (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities), R Foster (National Association of Careers Guidance Teachers), G Nyfield (NFER), S J Closs (Author APU Guide), F D Bedford (Department of Employment), A Thompson (Department of Education and Science Observer). |
