AdminHistoryIn late 1964 the Society was invited to submit evidence to the Royal Commission on the Penal System in England and Wales, headed by Viscount Amony, which was set up investigate the theory and practice of the treatment and punishment of offenders in England and Wales, and to recommend any changes thought necessary. The BPS set up a working party to gather evidence: Gordon Trasler (convenor), Aymeric Straker, Dermot Straker, Charlotte Banks, R G Andry and H B Gibson.
The Commission was wound up in May 1966 and the Home Secretary appointed instead a standing Advisory Council on the Penal System.
