AdminHistory | The Mental Health Act 1983 was formally approved on 9 May 1983 and came into effect on 30 September that year. It brought into law 'sectioning' where by people with a diagnosed mental disorder could be detained and have their disorder assessed or treated against their wishes. It was amended firstly in 1995, again in 2001 (via remedial order under the Human Rights Act 1998), and once more in 2007. |
