AdminHistoryIn 1985, the UK University Grants Committee (UGC) was created and aimed to establish a national system for the evaluation of research in universities by announcing that a Research Selectivity exercise to take place in 1986, the exercise would help them to decide the disbursement of funds for University research. A second exercise was proposed for 1989 but the UGC was wound up in 1 April 1989 with its powers transferred to the Universities Funding Council (UFC) who undertook an equivalent exercise known as the 'Research Assessment Exercise' (RAE). The UFC was replaced by Higher Education Funding Councils in 1992.
