AdminHistoryThe Social Work Service of the Department of Health and Social Security was launched on 1 April 1971, following a recommendation of the Seebohm
Committee. The Social Services Inspectorate was created in 1985 as part of the Department of Health [and Social Security]. In 1991 the Government required Authorities to constitute special units for the inspection of private and voluntary residential homes for adults and their own Local Authority residential homes, they also applied to inspection and registering of day care for children and child minders and children in independent boarding schools. The Inspecting Social Services paper proposed the idea of joint reviews.
