AdminHistoryInspired by WHO targets for the year 2000 published in 1978, Health of the Nation outlined a framework for health policy between 1992 and 1997 and applied a strategic approach to population-wide health improvement. The White Paper set improvement targets in five areas – coronary heart disease and stroke, cancer, accidents, mental illness and HIV/AIDs and sexual health.
The BPS under the Professional Affairs Board had in late 1992 set up a Health Psychology Working Party to look into integrating health and promoting health psychology, it comprised Bernard Kat, David Marks, Geoff Lindsay and Paul Hitchings. Their report The Contribution of Psychology to ~Health and Health Care in 2001: A Manifesto which not included a response to the Health of the Nation but also proposed that the Society set up a separate College of Psychology focussing on Health psychology. This proposal which was not accepted by the Professional Affairs Board although the response section was sent and published.
