Includes welcome of new Committee members Angela Clow (co-opted member) and Peter Wright (Psychology Education Board Member), recruitment of successor to Graham Powell as PPC Chair, agreement to advertise PPC Chair role in March 2004 issue, other Committee positions discussed, risk analysis policy, book review procedure, potential star rating system for reviews, editors manuscript rejection policy, review of past issues, high number of nominations for Book Award and Spearman Medal, corporate redesign, BPS garden at Chelsea Flower Show, internal changes to magazine including revised 'News and analysis' section and payments to professional contributors. Includes 'Rejected articles' document, outlining decisions why articles rejected for publication.

Includes welcome of Paul Redford as new Chair of the PPC, decision to incentivise committee membership to attract nominee from Membership and Professional Training Board, Kate Cavanagh appointed as Associate Editor representative, revised 'News and analysis' section ideas, review of past issues, Press Committee intentions to carry out focus groups on the subject of media releases, strategic plan discussion, risk analysis paper, correspondence from the Lesbian and Gay Psychology section regarding letter published in magazine in October 2003 - considered offensive by some -, published statement in response agreed.

22 October 2004 Psychologist Policy Committee minutes and papers only. Includes approval of a part-time Journalist post, revised 'News and analysis' section, discussion of letter published in response to controversy around article on homosexuality in The Psychologist and correspondence from the Lesbian and Gay Section, need to improve quality of articles debated, payment of freelance journalists debated, review of past issues, reports from representatives, manuscript update. Includes document containing correspondence regarding John Jacob Lyon's letter to The Psychologist entitled 'A paradoxical effect of homophobia?' in which a theory that the presence of homosexuality through the ages can be related to the pervasiveness of homophobia is forwarded. Numerous responses to this letter are recorded, many taking issue with argument. Includes document 'The Psychologist: Sexuality, Comment and Law' by Jim McManus arguing that the publication of statements which could be construed as homophobic in The Psychologist places the BPS at risk of legal action. Includes note stating Agenda for PPC meeting 22 October 2004 is missing.

AdminHistoryThe Psychologist is the in-house magazine for members of the British Psychological Society. The first issue was January 1988 - it was a successor to the Bulletin of the British Psychological Society [previously Quarterly Bulletin of the British Psychological Society] 1948-1987.

1. The Editorial Sub-Committee was a SubCommittee of the Standing Committee on Communications until December 1989. It acted as a policy making body on all issues regarding The Psychologist; act as an adviser to the Managing Editor and the Honorary Editors; act as a 'reviewer' of past issues of 'The Psychologist'

2. The Psychologist Editorial Committee succeeded the Editorial Sub-Committee and reported to Council. Assistant Editors were responsible for ideas and some copy for features, reviews, art work etc. There was also a team of Associate Editors who were responsible for generating and reviewing academic articles. The differentiation between academic and feature articles was gradually blurred.

The Assistant Editors became Associate Editors in 1995 after the review of the Committee in 1993-1994 and a staff member Stephen White became the sole Assistant Editor. The PEC lost its editorial function and its name changed to reflect this.
