AdminHistoryIn 1946 J C Raven proposed to the Council of the British Psychological Society that the Society create a new comprehensive journal rather than the existing British Journal of Psychology and specialist journals sent to section members, there were also calls for a 'non-technical expository' journal for members and non-members which was rejected as not a suitable activity for a scientific organisation. A committee was set up to consider the proposals.

The committee, headed by Frederick Laws reported in October 1947 suggesting that it would not be desirable to start a comprehensive journal to replace all the others as it would be too expensive but that some publication reporting the Society's activities and matters of professional interest and including psychological articles of a less technical nature than those in the Journals should be created . The Bulletin of the British Psychological Society initially quarterly [later monthly] Bulletin started in July 1948 to be distributed to all members. The Quarterly Bulletin was to give news of the activities of the Society and summarised papers which had not been published elsewhere as well as being a vehicle to improve contact and understanding between members of different specialist interests. It was agreed that from 1966 that the Bulletin could be on general sale but this was temporarily rescinded in 1974 when job advertising which had been in the separate appointments memoranda began to be included in the Bulletin. The appointments memoranda was again a loose insert sent to members only and the Bulletin was again available on subscription to libraries.

A new format for the Bulletin was introduced in 1968 part of a move towards a more general non specialised psychology magazine particularly after 1988 when the Bulletin was relaunched as The Psychologist. In the 1990s working parties considered whether The Psychologist could also be sold to the public.
