AdminHistory | In the spring of 1978 a survey was conducted of the postgraduate students in psychology departments throughout the country. The aim was determine whether there was any interest on the part of postgraduates in a conference where they could talk about research ideas and get to know other postgraduates in a fairly informal setting. The aim was to have an annual conference organised by postgraduate students themselves. Funding was procured from the Experimental Psychology Society and the BPS Scientific Affairs Board and the first conference was held at the University of Sheffield 3-5 April 1979 where there was 100 attendees and 36 papers presented with the President of the BPS Philip Levy addressing the conference.
During the 1983 a motion was passed that the SSRC should rescind its plans to abolish the quota system of allocation of post graduate training awards and install a competition based system. From 1984 abstracts of the conference were published in the Bulletin of the British Psychological Society. During the 1985 conference at Bedford College - the organising committee became the Postgraduate Affairs Group PSY PAG with an aim to meet four times a year and to provide a forum for postgraduate affairs. The first meeting was held 25 May 1985 at UCL.
A newsletter was founded c. 1991 which was printed and distributed by the British Psychological Society. In July 2021 Psypag became part of the British Psychological Socuety and was renamed Psychology Postgraduate Affairs Group. |
