Description | Meeting papers and correspondence for the British Psychological Society BPS Centenary Working Party, 1994-1995, including the first official Meeting Papers, from 19 December 1995.
The file contains correspondence on different ideas generated by the Working Party, in particular initiated by Stephen White and Allan Sakne, as well as letters from members appearing to respond to a call for ideas [appeal made in the Psychologist, September 1995], for ways to celebrate the Centenary of the British Psychological Society. In addition it contains the following:
8 October 1994: Proposal by Sandy Lovie, (Dr A.D. Lovie, of the BPS History and Philosophy of Psychology Section) for a publication celebrating the centenary of BPS and the Millenium. She considers the different forms the volume could take – she takes a preference for a history to be compiled of the Society. Also letter in response to Sandy by Alan Sakne, 21 october 1994.
27 Feb–11 May 1995: Following inital correspondence between 17 Feb 1992-12 Aug 1993 [see BPS/001/6/02/02/01/02] between Stephen White and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, further correspondence initiated by Stephen White, culminating in an arrangement to meet. A report on the meeting between Stephen White and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, documenting costs of commissioning and hiring the orchestra, and possible composers. A memo from John Walker in response to Stephen White, comparing the costs of hosting the conference at the Birmingham International Conference Centre BICC with elsewhere, and that it may be prohibitively expensive to do so in Birmingham, for the membership.
10 April 1995 Initial enquiry letter from Allan Sakne to The Royal Mail regarding a centenary issue of commemorative stamps for the British Psychological Society, making reference using the BPS visual archive.
19 June 1995 An invitation from the F&GP Finance & General Purposes Committee to make proposals for the London and Annual Conferences in 2001 to be held in ‘prestigious…but less expensive’ venues than the BICC.
12 September 1995 A memo from Allan Sakne to Stephen White and Margaret Mitchell - his suggestion that the Centenary Working Party move from being "adhoc" to become an official sub-committee of the F&GPSC, and to establish the budget. Suggesting that he, Stephen White and Margaret Mitchell write a report and a proposal.
4 October 1995 Meeting Notes from the Information Group, with notes specifically on the issue of Centenary planning, and its priority.
14 December 1995: Memo from Allan Sakne to the Centenary Working Party with attached correspondence dating back to 1990 on the subject of an updated History of the Society, with reference to the work on Jack Kenna (John C. Kenna).
19 December 1995: BPS Centenary Working Party Minutes and Papers. Meeting papers for the first official meeting of the Centenary Working Party. Geoff Lindsay is invited to Chair. Discussion included various potential book commissions; tie-ins with the conferences; sponsorship; invitations to all past presidents to attend the event; exhibitions; postage stamps; official centenary logo stationary; ‘careful choice about who the President is going to be that year; Activity of the membership sections, divisions, special groups and branches that year; special journal editions; a Parliamentary Group report; a television series’; Science Museum exhibition; trade exhibitions. It also suggested that soon the F&GP (and the BPS Council) may be asked to consider the whole centenary strategy for BPS, in terms of what BPS is trying to achieve. In addition, an agreement to implement centenary events with appropriate staffing resource.

AdminHistory | The Psychological Society was founded on 24 October 1901 at University College London. Its aim was 'to advance scientific psychological research, and to further the co-operation of investigators in the various branches of Psychology." It changed its name to 'The British Psychological Society' in 1906, to avoid confusion with another society.
In August 1991, ten years before the centenary of BPS in 2001, Stephen White [BPS Director of Information], initiated activity among BPS staff to support the celebration centenary.
A working party was founded in August 1991 following a meeting of Stephen White, Allan Sakne [BPS Business Manager], Amanda Briggs [BPS Conference and Events Manager] and David Bird [BPS Assistant Executive Secretary].
The working party was later to be established as a formal Sub-Committee under the Finance & General Purposes Committee in 1996.
This file contains the first notes and correspondence of the Working Party formed in 1991. The activity of the working party appears to have largely dropped until it was picked up again in 1994-1995, when the first official minuted meeting of the working party was held 19 December 1995.
Varied ideas for centenary activity from the committee were generated from the start. This was supplemented by a call out for ideas to the membership in the September 1995 issue of The Psychologist, ['News, p. 387, The Psychologist, Vol 8 No 9, September 1995, p387] |
