| AdminHistory | Geographically based British Psychological Society subsystems. They were first founded in 1924 with the Scottish and Birmingham Branches (from 1933 Midland) which was joined by the Northern Branch in 1932. By 1954 the Scottish branch had 200 members, the Northern 250 members and the Midland 120. Branches expanded in 1950s with South West of England (1955), Welsh (1955) , Northern Ireland (1956) and North East England (1957).
The Midland Branch ceased to exist in 1969 but was reformed as the West Midland Branch in 1995.
A Wessex (later Wessex and Wight Branch was founded in 1979. Similarly the North East of England Branch after ceasing in 1979 was revived in 2002. The South West of England Branch was reformed in 1997
The Northern Branch changed its name to the North of England Branch in 1987 and then in 1997 it became the North West of England Branch.
A London and Home Counties Branch was formed in 2006 and in 2016 East Midlands and East of England Branches were created.
Membership is automatic, and based on a member's geographical location.
From c. 1974 annual Branch Forum's are convened with representatives of all of Branches.
