AdminHistoryIn September 1979 The British Psychological Society Professional Affairs Board set up a working party to consider the practice of counselling, its reference to the professional interests of the Society, and to make recommendations. The terms of reference were extended to consider the broader field of counselling psychology. The working party comprised John Davis, Douglas Hamblin, James Hemming, Ruth Holdsworth, Barrie Hopson and Richard Nelson-Jones (Chairman). The working group carried out a survey on teaching and research in counselling in British Psychology Departments. They also consulted within the Society, to related organisations and interested individuals in the United Kingdom and abroad. One of the recommendations of the 1980 report was the establishment of a Section on Counselling

Counselling Psychology was set up as a Section of the British Psychological Society in December 1981 with its first meeting in January 1982 under the Chairmanship of Richard Nelson-Jones and Stephen Murgatroyd as the honorary Treasurer. There were 200 members initially with 450 by December 1985. A working party was set up to consider the case for applying to form a Division of Counselling Psychology the same year. This was because within the BPS divisions had some overview on training and qualifications. A working party of the Section was set up to consider the 'Essential Components in a Training Course for Counselling Psychologists.

There were 850 members by the end of 1987 and as the first step to becoming a Division - the Section applied for Special Group status in 1988 which was agreed by the Society in March 1989. The Group worked very closely with Membership and Qualifications Board to draft recommendations for a diploma in Counselling Psychology.

In 1992 they set up a Diploma in Counselling Psychology and started the process to become a Division [see BPS/02/02/02 BPS Division of Counselling Psychology] with an extraordinary meeting held in January 1994 which was ratified at the Society's AGM which also voted in favour of the title 'Chartered Counselling Psychologist'.
