DescriptionReport titled 'Note on Different Types of Correlation Coefficient.' (no. 48) by Philip E. Vernon.
The report outlines various types of coefficients and their differences. The first one is a rank-order correlation, where both the test and the criterion need to be ranked in increasing order. A product-moment correlation is the most common method, where the scores are approximately normally distributed. Contingency is used when marks are not normally distributed, or when qualitative categories are used. Biserial r is used when one of the variables consists of scores, and the other one consists of only two categories. Biserial r with top and bottom cases can be applied when the scores are available only for the 'bests' and 'worsts' in a group. Tetrachoric r is used when both variables consist of only two categories.
