DescriptionCorrespondence and drafts of an article by John S Murphy 'War Office Selection Boards 1942-1946' published in History and Philosophy of Psychology (2008) Vol. 10 (1), 16-31 [Journal of the BPS History and Philosophy of Psychology Section]. Murphy was a tester later a psychologist in the WOSB during this period.

Murphy mentions psychologists working at Head Quarters including E L Trist; B S Morris (1910-1999); Alex Mitchell; Boris Semeonoff (1910-1998); Rex Knight (1903-1963); and R L Morrison. He also mentions psychologists contributing to WSOB from collateral establishments includes J C Raven (1902-1970) and Hans J Eysenck as well as 'Control and Development' including John Bowlby (1907-1990), J D Sutherland (1905-1991), T Ferguson Rodger (1907-1978). Psychiatrists working at Boads Emmanuel Miller (1892-1970), J C Penton (1910-1987, and at collateral establishments John Rickman (1891-1951) and Wilfred Bion (1897-1979).

The War Office Selection Boards WOSB were established to select potential officers. They employed psychometric tests, outdoor leaderless group and other situational tests as well as interviews by a psychiatrist and the board president. The results were brought together at a case conference.
