| Activity | Sylvia Shimmin graduated in psychology from Bedford College, London, where she was subsequently employed as an Assistant Lecturer for five years.
From 1953-63 she was on the scientific staff of the Medical Research Council's Industrial Psychology Research Unit, concerned particularly with studies of incentive payment systems and of motivation in the workplace.
She then moved to to the department of Extramural Studies, University of Sheffield, where she specialised in courses for managers interested in applying psychology to industrial problems, together with related research and consultancy.
In 1969 she was appointed to the first Chair in Behaviour in Organisations at the University of Lancaster, from which she retired in 1989.
In 1994 she was visiting Professor at the University of Leeds.
Sylvia was awarded the BPS Lifetime Achievement Award to Occupational Psychology in 1996, along with Don Wallis, in recognition of their work on the publication of "50 Years of Occupational Psychology in Britain" and for a lifetime of service to the profession of occupational psychology.
Sylvia Shimmin was the First Chair of the British Psychological Society's Division of Occupational Psychology (DOP) 1971, (BPS Sub-System: Division of Occupational Psychology).
