RelationshipsProfessional Practice Board (PPB), BPS Council.
ActivityThe Professional Affairs Board (PAB) envisaged in the Society's document "The Re-organization of the Society", published in March 1972, and was appointed by BPS Council in 1973 and held its first meeting on 25 January 1974. It took over some of the functions of the Committee on the Training of Psychologists which had been reporting to Council since 1950 with Board of Examiners and Training committees reporting to it as well as the Standing Committee on Handicap, Standing Committee on Test Standards and the Standing Committee on Equal Opportunities. Some of the membership and qualification functions and committees were moved to a new Membership and Training Board/Membership and Qualifications Board in 1985.

The Professional Affairs Board also took some responsibility from Council for apppointing Society representatives to other organisations as well as coordinating and responding to consultations (together with the Scientific Affairs Board as appropriate) and agreeing and promoting policies relating to professional practice.

In 1974 the PAB completed arrangements for the setting up of regional offices in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and approved a code of professional conduct for the BPS Division of Occupational Psychology. Another area in which PAB was, active was the campaign for the legal registration of psychologists in the UK.

In 1989 the PAB made plans for two Diplomas offered by the Society: Diploma in Counselling Psychology and Diploma in Occupational Psychology.

In 1998 the PAB introduced a new Society Award for Distinguished Contributions to Professional Applied Psychology and in 2000 announced that it has instigated a new award to recognise the work of professional psychologists who have made a major contribution to the overall public good through ground-breaking work.

The Professional Affairs Board (PAB) was re-constituted as the Professional Practice Board (PPB) in 2002.
