| Activity | The primary achievement of the London & Home Counties Branch has been its coming to existence in April 2006. Although the first thoughts and conversations began in 2002, it took nearly four years to get to its current stage.
The first stage of setting up the Branch began in late 2004 when members of the Society wrote to the Board of Trustees proposing the new Branch. The Board of Trustees gave its approval in March 2005.
In the autumn of 2005 the establishment of the Branch moved a step closer when 11 per cent of the membership voted for the formation of the Branch (the Society’s Charter, Statutes and Rules specify that the Branch can be formed only if a minimum 10 per cent of the future members cast their support). The next stage was to gather the support of the potential branch members.
Having gathered their vote, a detailed proposal was presented to the Board of Trustees and the resolution of the formation was put to a special general meeting of members, which finally approved it in 9 December 2005. The inaugural event was held on 20 April 2006. This is when the Branch Committee was elected, currently consisting of 12 members.
The establishment of the London & Home Counties Branch was celebrated at a launch event in London on 11 July 2005. This was6 attended by around 300 guests who included branch members, media and politicians. The event was oversubscribed, with about two hundred people on the waiting list. Champagne and canapés followed two engaging talks presented by Dr Sean Cameron (UCL) and Professor Angela Clow (University of Westminster).
