| Activity | The first meeting of the Division of Clinical Psychologists Special Interest Group for Clinical Psychologists working with the Elderly was in 1980 arising out of a joint meeting with Age Concern. It was later renamed the Faculty of the Psychology of Older People.
It is a national group with over 600 members throughout the UK. Although primarily for Psychologists, membership is open to individuals from other disciplines and voluntary groups who share an interest in work with older people.
It has an elected national committee which includes a service user and carer representative and representatives from Scotland and Wales who not only are involved in highlighting issues to the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly but also contribute to broaden the work of the committee. We have joint representatives with the Division of Neuropsychology and the Professional Guidance Panel and hope this year to have reps from the Prequal and Health Psychology groups. The committee meets four times and holds two teleconferences a year. A strategy meeting in September determines the focus for the year. One of the network of 16 Geographical Groups take it in turns to host the annual conference and to produce an edition of the newsletter.
Locally, members are involved in service planning and contribute to training and supervision of trainee clinical psychologists. The Faculty’s newsletter has 4 editions a year featuring recent research and audit in the field. The content of editions over 12 months old is available on the website. The Geographical Groups have regular business meetings and host CPD events locally. Other CPD events are put on by the Training and Development subcommittee at venues throughout the UK. The annual conference has been a key feature of our work and networking for the last 30+ years. The 2012 conference in Bristol featured workshops on the two work streams for the year: IAPT for Older People and Working with Dementia. There was also a very successful day on working systemically with older people hosted by SW PSIGE.
In the IAPT work stream from 2010-12 Julia Boot (Lead) had convened multi-agency groups to look at producing commissioning guidance on IAPT and older people; workforce planning and training; long term conditions and working with people with dementia and their carers. Despite making up approximately 18 per cent the adult population at the point the groups started, older people were assessed to be less than 2% the IAPT population. This equity of access issue is now being addressed slowly. Working closely with the Department of Health IAPT team a number of successful outcomes have emerged.
A National Advisor for IAPT and Older People, Marie Claire Shankland has been appointed for a day a week to lead this work forward. The workforce planning and training group has developed competencies for the IAPT workforce in working with older people which are currently being piloted as a 2 day training in a couple of sites across the country before being rolled out to the wider IAPT workforce. A further 3 day training is planned. The work of the other groups is being taken forward at national level and is, for example, contributing to the pathfinder sites for long term conditions.
The Dementia Working group, initially led by Liz Baikie and now by Reinhard Guss, developed an expert reference group and produced a paper on Alternatives to the Use of Antipsychotic Medications. Members of the group have worked with the Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) and MSNAP (Memory Services National Accreditation Programme) across the year to improve services. On February 13th there will be a joint day hosted by the Faculty to look at developing a briefing paper on Psychological Aspects of Early Diagnosis of Dementia. This will be part of a suite of papers developed by the Faculty across the next few years on the dementia journey.
