Arthur Summerfield spent the early part of his life in Wilmslow Cheshire. A member of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Force, he was called up to active naval service in 1943. Personnel Selection Officer in the Admiralty In 1949 Arthur Summerfield became a lecturer at University College London then Head of the Department of Psychology at Birkbeck College in the University of London. His expertise ranged from the effects of nuclear bombs to the role of psychology in education.
In 1989 Arthur Summerfield retired and set up his own firm of chartered psychologists with his wife, Angela. This ran for 11 years before the couple moved to Sutton under Whitestonecliffe in 2001.
Arthur Summerfield died of a brain haemorrhage at Northallerton's Friarage Hospital in 2005.

N.B. Arthur Summerfield was Honorary General Secretary of the BPS from 1954 to 1959, at a key period in which the Society was formulating its intention to seek a Royal Charter. He was then President from 1963-1964 a critical year for negotiations relating to the Royal Charter and also known for the first public report on educational psychology entitled "Psychologists in Education Services" (aka The Summerfield Report), HMSO. 1968
