| Activity | L Haward's first post was as an Assistant Personnel Officer for an unknown Aldershot company.
Throughout the war Lionel Haward served as an Instructor in the Technical Training Command of the RAF, later working with RAF Police HQ in Germany.
In 1946 he went to Bristol University to study chemistry and psychology graduating in 1950. He remained at Bristol to take his MA then studied at Leyden University in the Netherlands for his Doctorate, and was awarded the Queen Wilhelmina Academic Medal in 1952.
Professor Haward then held appointments at hospitals in Bristol, Durham and Chichester initially as Assistant Psychologist and finally as Consultant. He joined Surrey University in 1973 as reader in Clinical Psychology and Director of the MSc Course in Clinical Psychology. Professor Haward has been involved as an expert witness in most of the notable criminal trials of the 60's and 70's and has presented evidence before many commissions and committees.
The International Academy of Forensic Psychology, of which he is a fellow, presented him in 1970 with the Holmes-Munsterberg Award for "the highest achievement in contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of forensic psychology".
After Professor Haward's retirement from Surrey University in 1987 he worked as an honorary consultant psychologist to the Chichester Health Trust and Nanhurst Children's Hospital in addition to working occasionally on court cases and publishing scientific papers.
Professor Haward was a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and offered Honorary BPS Life Membership in 1997.
