| Activity | On 15 May 1971 the [BPS] Council elected 131 founder members to the Division [DOP] and the DOP came into being on 2nd July 1971 and ran alongside the BPS Occupational Psychology Section [which was founded in 1919 as the Industrial Section].
In 1974 it was agreed that the Division should be primarily concerned with professional matters and the Occupational Section with scientific matters. A student prize competition was instigated in 1986.
In 2001 the DOP was reconstituted to include members from the Occupational Section, and the section closed.

In 2001 the Division was reconstituted to include members of the former Occupational Psychology Section.
The DOP is now concerned with both the professional and scientific aspects of occupational psychology.
In October 2021 DOP announced six new group types for the division: Member Initiative Groups, Expert Advisory Panel, Development Platforms, Task and Finish Groups, Sub-committees and 5 Interest Streams – one for each of the five areas of occupational psychology. These replaced the previously existing working groups and sub-committees.
