| Activity | A Special Meeting of the Society 18 December 1987 approved the creation of the The Psychology of Women Section. Symposia were held at the BPS Annual and London Conferences in 1988 and the first independent conference was in 1990 in Birmingham
Aims
Bring together everyone with an interest in the Psychology of Women
Provide a forum for the Psychology of Women in research, teaching and professional practice
Increase awareness and action around gender and inequality issues within the BPS, the Psychology profession, and the teaching of Psychology.
The Section is open to all members of the BPS. The majority of members are women who work in the various areas within psychology: clinical, educational, social, developmental, health, occupational, and lesbian & gay psychology.
The Section's main activities are:
Organising its own annual meeting, as well as symposia and workshops at major Society conferences;
Holding occasional meetings at which members may exchange ideas more informally;
Producing a regular newsletter with up-to-date information and comment on developments in the psychology of women and related areas;
Production of the publication Psychology of Women Section Review which aims to promote and support academic research and debate on issues related to the psychology of women and encourage the development of theory and practise concerning gender and other social inequalities.
A reduction of 30 per cent off the standard individual subscription rate for the international journal Feminism and Psychology is available to members of the Section. A special order form is sent to new members of the Section.
In 2017 the section changed its name to Psychology of Women & Equalities (POWES).
At the POWES annual conference 2021 POWES launch the Marcia Worrell Mentoring Award in memory of the psychologist Marcia Worrell. The inaugural award was presented to Marcia’s family at the conference.
