| Activity | The British Psychological Society Special Group in Coaching Psychology was formed as a result of lobbying by the Coaching Psychology Forum (CPF). CPF originally started as an internet based forum. It was founded in 2002 in response to concerns about untrained or poorly trained coaches, and the related need to promote improved standards of practice for the benefit of the profession of coaching, coaches, their clients and the public at large. In February 2003 CPF formed a working group and petitioned for the British Psychological Society to set up a group that supported psychologists who were involved in coaching practice, to enable them to focus on deepening understanding and awareness of coaching psychology as an area of psychological practice.
After almost 2 years, on 15 December 2004, the Executive Committee of the SGCP was established at the inaugural Annual General Meeting of the Special Group in Coaching Psychology attended by 360 members.
2020 SGCP sought the re-designation of the Special Group in Coaching Psychology to the Division of Coaching Psychology. The SGCP Committee agreed in November 2020 to pursue re-designation as a Division and called a Special General Meeting. The SGM of the SGCP took place on 12th January 2021 to consider the resolution to re-designate the Special Group and to approve membership criteria for new members wishing to join the Special Group once it is re-designated as a Division. The standards that had been approved by PACT were submitted to the Special Group for Coaching for consideration.
The SGCP SGM passed the resolution for re-designation (40 members in favour; 4 members opposed; 1 abstention) and approved the membership criteria for the Division (36 members in favour; 1 member opposed; 9 abstentions).
Membership in October 2020 stands at 2,319.
On the 26 July 2021 at the BPS AGM members voted in favour on the resolution 'Special Group in Coaching Psychology becomes the Division of Coaching Psychology'. On the 1 November 2021 the Division of Coaching Psychology was formally established.
In 2021 the SGCP's two coaching journals, International Coaching Psychology Review & The Coaching Psychologist, were moved to digital only platforms to reduce the impact of print and distribution on the environment.
