| Activity | The Wessex Branch of the British Psychological Society was officially formed at the Society's Annual General meeting in April 1979, following the work of a steering group in the area.
The First Branch meeting was held in Portsmouth Polytechnic in May 1979 and the Branch Committee elected, under the Chairmanship of H.J.Wright.
The Committee planned a programme for 1980 based on four scientific and social meetings a year, to be held at Southampton University.
Eighty local members of the BPS joined the Branch and the Committee hoped to develop a programme which would appeal to applied as well as academic psychologists. In 1986 they held a symposium at the BPS Annual Conference 'The Seven Faces of Educational Psychology' and the following year started a newsletter.
In 2006 the Wessex and Wight Branch's boundary was extended to include Kent and the Branch was renamed Wessex Branch
