AdminHistorySummerfield spent the early part of his life in Wilmslow Cheshire. A member of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Force, he was called up to active naval service in 1943. In 1949 he became a lecturer at University College London then Head of the Department of Psychology at Birkbeck College in the University of London. His expertise ranged from the effects of nuclear bombs to the role of psychology in education. In 1989 he retired and set up his own firm of chartered psychologists with his wife, Angela. This ran for 11 years before the couple moved to Sutton under Whitestonecliffe in 2001. He died of a brain haemorrhage at Northallerton's Friarage Hospital in 2005.
